The solution is to go to Adobe's web site and install the Adobe iFilter. If you have this, it will make your fan run non-stop, slow everything else, and ruin battery life. Regarding background activity, the biggest offender I ever found was Nuance PDF, which installs a defective iFilter. You can diagnose this using Task Manager. It is also possible that background activity is slowing your system down.

The video driver could be a problem if yours is not up-to-date, as there have been a lot of issues with earlier drivers.
